EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR): A Practical Overview

Categorised in: Posted on Fri 20th March

Brussels, March 9, 2026 – IPA Europe hosted the high-level webinar “Preparing for PPWR: Are You Ready?”, providing the probiotics sector with practical insights and strategies to navigate upcoming regulatory changes, ensuring stakeholders are fully prepared for the evolving landscape. The event brought in about eighty industry leaders from around the world. In the opening welcome, Rosanna Pecere, Executive Director of IPA Europe, stressed that: “The EU is introducing requirements that will significantly reshape packaging across all sectors. As probiotics do not benefit from the same flexibilities as medicinal products, it is vital that our members understand the practical implications starting now.”

The session provided members with a clear overview of the regulation’s legislative background, key sustainability requirements—including recyclability, PFAS limits, recycled content targets, and packaging minimization—compliance milestones, and opportunities to engage on secondary legislation.

Special focus was given to the practical implications for the probiotic manufacturing sector, and the webinar concluded with a Q&A, allowing participants to clarify key provisions.
